The George Peabody Library, originally the Peabody Institute Library, is the research library of Johns Hopkins University. As part of the Institute meant to be a cultural center for Baltimore, the library was part of the institute from 1878 until 1967, when it passed to the ownership of the city of Baltimore. Now, it has been passed to Johns Hopkins and holds the university's special collections such as one of the world's foremost collections of Don Quixote editions. Described as a cathedral of books, the library features an atrium, black and white marble floor, and many balconies and columns. The library contains over 300,000 volumes mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, including British and American history, English and American literature, history of the sciences, as well as a large map collection and bound manuscripts.
