Teaching: The Global Teacher Prize
Description
Nancie Atwell is the 2015 winner of the Global Teacher Prize from the Varkey Foundation. The Global Teacher Prize is a one million dollar award that is given to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. The Prize underlines the importance of the teaching profession and symbolizes the fact that teachers throughout the world deserve to be recognized and celebrated.
The Varkey Foundation launched the Global Teacher Prize in 2014 to raise the stature of the teaching profession. The Varkey Foundation is a not-for-profit, philanthropic organization that focusses on: providing access to education, building teacher capacity and advocacy.
The Prize is open to currently working teachers who teach children that are in compulsory schooling, or are between the ages of five and eighteen. Teachers who continue to teach, even on a part-time basis are also eligible, as are teachers of online courses. The Prize is open to teachers in every kind of school and, subject to local laws, in every country in the world.
The 2015 Global Teacher Prize winner founded the Center for Teaching and Learning, a non-profit demonstration school created for the purpose of developing and disseminating effective classroom practices. She has written 9 books on teaching, edited 5 collections and delivered 120 keynote addresses on her teaching. In 2011 she received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of New Hampshire, USA.
