Smokey Says - Hold 'Til It's Cold… Prevent Forest Fires

Smokey the Bear PSA

Since 1944, Smokey the Bear has educated generations on the importance of forest/wildfire prevention, and the PSA campaign is the longest running in the United States. The original slogan was “Smokey Says - Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires,” but was later changed to “Remember... Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires” in 1947. The current slogan, “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” was implemented in 2001, in response to fires occurring outside of the forest landscape.
 
As of 2000, this campaign has significantly reduced acreage lost from fires, from 22 million to 8.4 million.
