Motivation for the Public Service (D-3)

Description
An account of the resource
"I was having a better time at my job than were those of my peers who had opted for private practice. Life as a public servant was more interesting. The work was more challenging. The encouragement and guidance from good mentors was more genuine. And the opportunities to take initiative and to see real results were more frequent."

- Sandra Day O'Connor

Motivation for public service is often referred to as a “calling” and those who hear it are determined to do meaningful work that will make a difference to their communities. Often those with the motivation for public service come from families with experience working in public service. They choose to pursue an education that will prepare them for working in administrative positions or in one of the many fields of public service, such as social welfare, law enforcement, and firefighting. Those who choose to work in nonprofit organizations also share the motivation for public service with concern for the wellbeing of others over and above their own gain.

Many who study motivation for public service do so to inform public sector recruitment processes. Person-to-organization fit is an important aspect of successful personnel recruitment. Studies have found that the motivation for public service differs from the motivation for careers in private businesses. Another indication of motivation for public service is an interest in public policy. Public policy development is fundamental to public service since public policies indicate the focus of public service delivery and the role and function of public agencies and their employees.

Socialization also influences individuals’ motivation for public service. A form of socialization, in addition to parental and educational, is professional socialization. Membership in professional public service organizations, participation in their conferences and other networking activities contributes a lot to building awareness of what is entailed in responding to the call to public service.

Description
An account of the resource
The Peace Corps is a volunteer service program overseen by the United States government. Following the success of some smaller programs, like Operation Crossroads Africa, President John F. Kennedy signed an Executive order in 1961 creating the Peace Corps. Its mission is to send willing Americans to provide social and economic development abroad where it is needed, as well as acting as a soft foreign policy arm of the government to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the rest of the world. Volunteers work abroad in two-year terms with governments, schools, non-profits, and even individual entrepreneurs. Since its establishment, the Peace Corps has sent over 235,000 Americans to over 141 countries to serve. The organization has set many lofty initiatives, such as the eradication of malaria in Africa and the protection of the environment through education. The volunteers of the Peace Corps are not paid any salary, and are truly motivated by an urge to serve.

The Straus Family: A History of Public Service and Philanthropy (G-2)

Description
An account of the resource
Beginning in the 19th Century and continuing into the 20th, members of the Straus Family have served in governmental positions at the federal and local levels. More particularly, family members have served in the House of Representatives, as Ambassadors, and as Presidential Cabinet Members. By virtue of their positions, as well as a consequence of their acting as advisors and confidants to a number of American Presidents, family members have been actively involved in the formulation of American public policy for well over 100 years.

Furthermore, in the context of American finance and commerce, family members were the owners of Macy's for nearly 100 years. In addition to their participation in the commercial development of the City of New York and America in general, family members have been in a position to assist others less fortunate throughout this period of time. Members of the family have served on the boards of innumerable philanthropic organizations. As a consequence of the family's involvement in this broad spectrum of American life, the family exemplifies and brings to life the true American story and its spirit.

Thus, it is not so much the story of one family that is sought to be told, but rather the American experience as seen through and lived by a family during this period of growth of America.

Source: www.straushistoricalsociety.org

Return to The Straus Family: A History of Public Service and Philanthropy

Description
An account of the resource

Oscar S. Straus wanted to be appointed to the court of arbitration at The Hague. The court had been established at the 1899 peace conference but existed only as a panel of judges appointed by each nation. He was finally appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902 and held this position until his own death in 1926. Naomi Cohen wrote, "Of all the positions Straus filled this was the one he held in greatest esteem. For him personally the appointment meant recognition as a jurist, an office of international dignity, and the kind of respect usually reserved for elder statesmen. Far more important, it meant his participation in an institution, "the crowning act of the nineteenth century," which could help lead the world to everlasting peace."

The peace movement was gaining ground all over the world and Oscar took a prominent role in many new peace organizations. He wrote, "Let the nations exact the same standard from one another that they exact from their subjects, substituting international morality for international expediency, and they will have, instead of the arbitrament of war, the arbitrament of law." He advocated for a stronger role for the Court of Arbitration at The Hague and felt that domestic policy and international concerns should be linked.

While Mr. Carnegie’s primary aim was to benefit the people of the United States, he later determined to use a portion of the funds for members of the British overseas Commonwealth. Currently, this area of our grantmaking focuses on selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa.”

Description
An account of the resource

The initial reactions to the Peace Corps proposal are convincing proof that we have, in this country, an immense reservoir of such men and women-anxious to sacrifice their energies and time and toil to the cause of world peace and human progress.

By President John F. Kennedy 1961

The Peace Corps finds its roots In 1960, when students of the University of Michigan were challenged by then Senator John F. Kennedy. In an effort to promote peace worldwide, he urged them to serve their country by working and living in developing countries.

Since its official founding in 1961, over 200,000 volunteers have served with the Peace Corps in 139 different countries. Work areas include Education, Health & HIV/AIDS, Business Development, Environment, Youth Development, and Agriculture. Working in small villages and towns all over the world, not only do volunteers help people rebuild themselves and their community, but they also create a positive image of the United States abroad.

The Peace Corps’ mission is as follows:

Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of the Americans.
