Harry Yount National Park Ranger Award
Motivation for the Public Service
“If a trail is to be blazed, it is 'send a ranger.' If an animal is floundering in the snow, a ranger is sent to pull him out; if a bear is in the hotel, if a fire threatens a forest, if someone is to be saved, it is 'send a ranger.' If a Dude wants to know the why, if a Sagebrusher is puzzled about a road, it is 'ask the ranger.' Everything the ranger knows, he will tell you, except about himself." – Stephen T. Miller

The Harry Yount National Park Ranger Award is an annual award honoring the national park rangers that have best embodied what it means to serve as a ranger. This ranges from protecting natural resources, to serving visitors, to more dangerous roles such as search and rescue. National Park Rangers may not be in the public eye as much as politicians or police officers, but they are just as much public servants. National Parks inspire many generations of Americans to understand the importance of our natural resources and motivate many to a career in conservation or environmental policy. Outstanding park rangers allow everyone to have such an experience.

Open Government Partnership
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is an international initiative that secures commitments from national and sub-national governments to promote corruption deterrence and empower citizens rights. The Open Government Partnership was launched in 2011 and has since grown to include 79 countries around the world. It provides a platform for governmental reformers, both inside and outside of office, to help develop policies that promote transparency. The relationship between government and civil society is paramount – a healthy relationship between these two will lead to a healthy nation. The populous of any country is less likely to go into public service, or even participate in basic civic acts such as voting, if they believe that their government is corrupt. Eradicating corruption in all levels of government is crucial if you wish to draw people out of cynicism and to service. The Open Government Partnership is a pledge to do such.
Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is a volunteer service program overseen by the United States government. Following the success of some smaller programs, like Operation Crossroads Africa, President John F. Kennedy signed an Executive order in 1961 creating the Peace Corps. Its mission is to send willing Americans to provide social and economic development abroad where it is needed, as well as acting as a soft foreign policy arm of the government to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the rest of the world. Volunteers work abroad in two-year terms with governments, schools, non-profits, and even individual entrepreneurs. Since its establishment, the Peace Corps has sent over 235,000 Americans to over 141 countries to serve. The organization has set many lofty initiatives, such as the eradication of malaria in Africa and the protection of the environment through education. The volunteers of the Peace Corps are not paid any salary, and are truly motivated by an urge to serve.

Race to the Top
Motivation for the Public Service
Race to the Top was a multi-billion dollar grant created by the United States Department of Education in 2009. It was funded as part of President Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act following the Great Recession. The grant established a points system in which different states competed to score highest. The better a state performed on these criteria, the more federal money they would receive. States were awarded points for enacting performance-based evaluations for educators, adopting common standards, making progress in their lowest performing schools, and other policies centered around improving education. This grant was created to ensure that states doing the best at bettering the education of their children would be rewarded.

Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi
Motivation for the Public Service
Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, or Sheikha Fatima, is the widow of the former Sheikh Zayed, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikha Fatima is affectionately known as the “Mother of the UAE” among the country’s citizens. She is best known for her lifelong promotion of women’s rights, both in her own country and around the Arab world. In 1975, Sheikha Fatima formed the UAE Women’s Federation, of which she still heads. This council focused on civil rights and education for women and girls throughout the UAE. In the early 1990’s Sheikha Fatima pushed for the inclusion of women into the Federal National Council of the Emirates (the UAE’s parliamentary council). While she is less in the public eye nowadays, she still finds ways to aid women in the region. One such example is the Sheikha Fatima Award for Excellence which offers tuition rewards to phenomenally successful girls in the Arab world and India. Sheikha Fatima has spent her entire life both in service of her country and even more so in service of women everywhere.

Where does my money go?

Return to High Performing Public Organizations

“Where Does My Money Go?” was a web tool for the public to learn where governmental revenues come from and are used. Visitors to the city’s web site could select a revenue category and see where that type of income comes from and which services receive that income. Another web tool, the Dashboard allowed the public direct access to the budget, encumbrance and expenditure status of every program and line item in the city, updated daily.
