The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is a nonprofit organization that provides programs, services and live entertainment to United States troops and their families. Since 1941, it has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD), relying heavily on private contributions and on funds, goods, and services from various corporate and individual donors. Although congressionally chartered, it is not a government agency. The USO operates 160 centers worldwide. the USO has provided American troops stationed around the world with entertainment from a variety of celebrities. One of the biggest supporters of the USO was Bob Hope, and in all he headlined over 60 tours with the USO, spanning countless decades from World War II to the Persian Gulf War. In all, the Bob Hope Christmas USO tour lasted over 34 years. In 1997 Bob Hope was named the nation's first honorary veteran of the United States Armed Forces for his dedication and comitment to entertaining America's troops by President Bill Clinton.
