Millicent (Wilson) Hearts, Philanthropist
<h4><a href="https://vmps.omeka.net/exhibits/show/philanthropy-gallery/philanthropy-gallery">Return to Philanthropy</a></h4>
Millicent Hearst (1882 - 1974) is best known for founding the Free Milk Fund for Babies in 1921. For decades, it helped provide milk to the poor people of New York City, raising money through a variety of activities, such as boxing matches. However, Hearst did not stop there. Her social activism earned her the position of Chairman of the Mayor’s Committee of Women on National Defense, which sponsored events and rallies. In addition to serving on wartime committees, she went on to host a multitude of fundraisers for causes such as crippled children and the New York Journal Christmas Fund. Eleanor Roosevelt joined her at many of these charitable functions during the Great Depression.

<strong>"The government is us. Government jobs belong to the American people, not to politicians, and should be filled only with regard to public service."</strong> - President Theodore Roosevelt <br /><br />A sense of having been wronged… brought Charles Julius Guiteau to the Baltimore and Potomac Station in Washington on July 2, 1881. On that same Saturday morning, President James Abram Garfield strode into the station to catch the 9:30 A.M. limited express, which was to take him to the commencement ceremonies of his alma mater, Williams College... Within seconds of entering the station, Garfield was felled by two of Guiteau's bullets, the opening act in what would be a drama that included rising and then falling hopes for the President's recovery, the most celebrated insanity trial of the century and, finally, civil service reform that backers hoped might discourage future disappointed patronage seekers from taking revengeful actions.

The Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service (FELPS) inspires, engages, and connects emerging public service leaders with a unique career planning and professional development opportunity. The Fellowship recognizes the strong commitment to public service that Fellows have demonstrated and strengthens this commitment by providing professional development and networking opportunities aimed at assisting Fellows in developing plans for successful public service careers. FELPS is one of the first programs that actively guides and engages emerging leaders in a process that encourages self-directed career development. This process encourages Fellows to explore the facets of public service most appealing to them while simultaneously presenting them with the exciting and challenging options that a modern-day public service career offers. Through this Fellowship, the Research Center for Leadership in Action at NYU Wagner is extending its commitment to educating the next generation of public service leaders.

George Baker has had many buildings named after him, because he used his funds to donate to higher education for those around him. Harvard Business school named their library after him when he gave them a starting grant of over $5 million in 1924. Columbia University has Baker Field, their primary athletic facility, due to Baker’s funds. One of Dartmouth College’s biggest symbols is their Baker Memorial Library, after he provided $2 million for the school. Besides spreading his name, his spreading of wealth also led to co-founding the First National Bank of the City of New York.

<strong>"Open the doors to all. Let the children of the rich and the poor take their seats together and know of no distinction save that of industry, good conduct, and intellect."</strong> - Townsend Harris (1804-1878) <br /><br />"I shall never bring disgrace to my city, nor shall I ever desert my comrades in the ranks: but I, both alone and with my many comrades, shall fight for the ideals and sacred things of the city. I shall willingly pay heed to whomever renders judgment with wisdom and shall obey both the laws already established and whatever laws the people in their wisdom shall establish. I, alone and with my comrades, shall resist anyone who destroys the laws or disobeys them. I shall not leave my city any less but rather greater than I found it." - Recited annually by students in Townsend Harris High School at Queens College.
