"There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well."

- Walter Reuther

Strong leadership in the public sector has played an instrumental role in guiding nations in many parts of the world. Leadership has been described as the, “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.” The United States Office of Personnel Management has a Center for Leadership Development, where there is the belief that “leaders are made and not born.” Their training programs focus on strengthening leadership in public service through providing courses in team building and team leadership, executive, managerial and supervisory development and networking with peers from all branches of government.

Developing public service leadership is important for ensuring the effectiveness of public organizations. For this reason, although today there are many great leaders at the helm of public agencies in various places, those agencies would do well to focus on succession planning so as to make sure that their leadership positions can always be filled. Educational programs in higher education institutions are also giving their attention to leadership development. In the public service we need leaders at different levels of government as well as in different capacities within public organizations. Although leadership specializations are important for public service human resource development, leadership courses are a positive component across curricula for public service and community work. Competent leaders have important roles to play in all public departments and programs.

There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well.

Walter Reuther

Walter Reuther was a highly influential American Labor Union Leader of the 20th century.
From the Walter P. Reuther Library website, "Walter P. Reuther was one of America’s great labor leaders. He was also living proof that one person can make a difference. Reuther was president the United Automobile Workers union (UAW) between 1946 and 1970. Under his leadership, the American and Canadian members of the UAW obtained their fare share of the enormous wealth they produced and were able to restore dignity to the industrial work they performed. Reuther’s work, however, went well beyond contract negotiations and union organizing."

An account of the resource

Jennifer Granholm is the former governor and attorney general of Michigan. She served as Michigan’s 47th governor from 2003 to 2011 and as Michigan’s Attorney General before that, from 1998-2002. Granholm is one of the leading authorities in the U.S. on clean energy policy. During her tenure, she pioneered clean energy policies, working with business, labor, Republicans and Democrats, to create new economic opportunities in Michigan.

In 2005, the Granholm economic development team put together an aggressive strategy to make Michigan the hub of clean-energy development in North America by developing entire supply chains in Michigan, fostering critical partnerships between industry, government and researchers and by creating economic incentives that made Michigan the place to locate. Granholm’s plan included specific clustering strategies targeted at battery manufacturing, bio-energy, solar, and wind power.

Granholm is an honors graduate of both the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard Law School. She began her career in public service as a judicial clerk for Michigan's 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. She became a federal prosecutor in Detroit in 1990, and in 1994, she was appointed Wayne County Corporation Counsel. Granholm was elected Michigan's first female attorney general in 1998. After leaving office, Granholm was an advisor to Pew Charitable Trusts’ Clean Energy Program, where she led a national campaign for clean energy policies. She is a Senior Research Fellow, Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI) and Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), and a Distinguished Adjunct Professor, UC Berkeley School of Law & Goldman School of Public Policy.

Description
An account of the resource

Senator Cory A. Booker was Mayor of Newark from 2006 – 2013. He won a special election to fill the term of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg in 2013 - and became New Jersey’s first African-American senator. He serves on the Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation, Small Business and Entrepreneurship and Environment and Public Works Committees. Under his leadership as mayor, New Jersey’s largest city, Newark, entered its biggest period of economic growth since the 1960s – the first new downtown hotels were constructed in 40 years, the first new office towers in 20. During Cory’s tenure, overall crime declined and the quality of life for residents improved with more affordable housing, new green spaces and parks, increased educational opportunities and more efficient city services.

Senator Booker was born in Washington, D.C. His father, Cary, was from North Carolina and the son of a single mom, and his mother, Carolyn, is a Detroit native. They both worked for IBM and relocated the family to Harrington Park in Bergen County, New Jerey. Housing rights activists helped the family buy their first home after initially being turned down because of the color of their skin.

A star athlete at Northern Valley High School in Old Tappan, Cory Booker earned bachelors and masters degrees from Stanford University, where he also played for the football team. He ran a crisis hotline for students and worked with disadvantaged youth in East Palo Alto. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar where he ran a student tutoring and mentoring program in a disadvantaged community. He later earned his law degree from Yale Law School, where he helped lead free legal clinics for New Haven residents.
