James Benson Dudley

Title

James Benson Dudley

Description

A newspaper sketch of James Benson Dudley, president of The Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race.

When James Dudley was elected to be the next president of The Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race, not much was expected of him or the school. He went to prove both wrong as he changed the curriculum, as he knew that the best way to improve the living conditions for African-Americans was to give them access to better jobs via education. He added many different classes to the school, including horticulture, shoe-making, domestic science, and electrical engineering. He also added an entire teaching department to help students become teachers. For all his hard work, the school was renamed "Agricultural and Technical College".
