Anna Ottendorfer helped flourish the New Yorker Staats-Zeitung, a newspaper for German-language citizens of the United States. It achieved mass success, equaling that of the New York Times, and so Ottendorfer decided to help out women and the German culture. She used $150,000 to build the Isabella Home for Aged Women in Astoria, Long Island, named after her deceased daughter. For German immigrants, she built the women's pavilion of the German Hospital, New York City, at a cost of $75,000, and gave $100,000 for the German Dispensary. When Germany was going through massive flooding, she sent aid in 1882 and 1883, receiving medals of honor from Empress Augustua for all her efforts. When she passed, her will ensured her employees at the paper would still be well off, bequeathing them $25,000.
