Yucca Mountain

Title

Yucca Mountain

Description

Yucca Mountain is a site located in Nevada that is well-known as the federal government's location for a deep geologic repository for the safe storage of used nuclear fuel. This site was designated by the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, which also grants the affected limits of local government participation rights. Currently there are 64,000 metric tons of spent reactor fuel in temporary storage in 36 states and thousands of containers of highly radioactive waste arising from the cleanup of nuclear weapons production sites. These materials could pose a risk to the health and safety of future generations if not properly managed. Lately there has been more discussion, after the shut-down of Yucca Mountain, of how to safely deal with hazardous materials that have half-lives of thousands of years.
